COLUMBUS—The Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association held its annual awards banquet on Sunday in Columbus with several area players and one area coach receiving awards.

Senior Mason Pelphrey representing Clay was presented with his Division III Second Team award. A multi-sport, student athlete, Pelphrey scored 23 goals and 15 assist for the Panthers while achieving a 3.77 GPA.

Also receiving a nomination for Second Team in Division III, Wheelersburg’s Keith Thurmer scored 21 goals and added 11 assists for the Pirates during his junior campaign.

Making his mark on the Division II list was Waverly junior Jacob Purpero. Thurmer nor Purpero were able to attend the banquet.

Along with the aforementioned players, Wheelersburg coach Paul Boll was awarded the 2013 Ron Pinsenschaum Award.

The Pinsenschaum award is given annually to a coach that recognizes ethics and sportsmanship as well as efforts to build the soccer throughout the state of Ohio. The award is considered the highest achievement for a boys’ soccer coach in the state.

Boll is the only person to coach soccer at Wheelerburg. Boll created the program in 1986 and has coached the Pirates for the last 28 years.

Ruth Boll of the Scioto Voice contributed to this report.
