With area schools announcing closings Monday and Tuesday, high school basketball games were forced to be postponed.

All eight SOC girls basketball games were called off Monday because of the weather front that entered Ohio late Sunday and will continue to keep people indoors. By Monday night, a number of schools announced makeup dates while others were still looking to fit in these contests.

Specifically, five of Monday’s games already have new dates. The earliest of the games to be made up will be Jan. 11 when East travels to Notre Dame.

The following Saturday, Western will travel to Green for an SOC I game while Minford will visit Waverly for an SOC II contest. Lastly, Jan. 25 will feature Symmes Valley at Clay in SOC I play and South Webster is at SOC II-leading Oak Hill.

The remaining SOC I game, Eastern at New Boston, as well as the other two SOC II games, which had Valley at Northwest and West at Wheelersburg, have yet to announce new dates for those games.

When it comes to Tuesday’s games, school officials are already removing risks by postponing games. The Daily Times was able to confirm Monday that Wheelersburg’s trip to Northwest, Notre Dame’s visit to Symmes Valley, Green’s SOC I contest at East and New Boston’s bus ride to Clay are all postponed. The final of the four contests has Jan. 11 as a makeup date.

The Daily Times also learned that Minford’s game at Oak Hill as well as West’s trip to South Webster will be determined by Tuesday morning. The status for the remainder of Tuesday’s SOC boys games — Waverly at Valley and Western at Eastern — the SHAC boys game between Peebles and Lynchburg-Clay and the Piketon at Chillicothe Huntington SVC girls game are still a mystery.

Before Monday night’s news, Portsmouth officials announced 24 hours before its home boys game last Saturday with Cleveland Martin Luther King Jr. was scrapped and rescheduled for Feb. 8.

The Daily Times will continue to provide updates through its website and social media sites as they become available. Coaches and athletic directors are encouraged to report all postponements and cancellations as soon as they occur.
