In football, losses can be either from beating yourself or from the better team taking control and showing its wherewithal from the outset.

The Notre Dame Titans played hard, but simply got beat by a better football team as the Covington Buccs defeated the Titans 46-0 in a Division VII, Region 26 quarterfinal Saturday night in Covington.

Notre Dame was held to just 82 yards of total offense in the contest as the Buccs only allowed the Titans to cross midfield twice.

“We played our hardest, but we just didn’t have it tonight,” Coach Bob Ashley said.

The Titans would get the ball to start the contest but were only able to churn out a total of four yards on three plays as the Buccs forced Notre Dame into a three-and-out.

However, Covington would get rolling right from the outset as the Buccs needed only four plays on their opening possession to go 74 yards and kick off the scoring as A.J. Ouellette scored from six yards out to put the Buccs up 7-0 with 8:28 left to play in the first quarter. Ouellette also broke the Covington all-time record for all-purpose yards earlier on in the drive.

Ouellette would add two more touchdown runs later on in the quarter as the senior running back scored on a 3-yard tote and a 6-yard scamper to extend the Covington lead to 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Buccs would add two more touchdowns in the second frame as Jared Williams would find Zakk Collins for a 10-yard touchdown to cap off a 4-play, 25-yard drive for the first touchdown of the frame for Covington and extended the Buccs’ lead to 27-0.

Ouellette would get his fourth and final rushing touchdown of the contest via a 1-yard plunge and capped off an 8-play, 67-yard drive to extend the lead to 34-0 with 1:05 to play in the half, where the scoring would cease to the halftime break.

The Buccs would kick off the second half in the same fashion that they did in the first half by scoring on their very first possession of the half.

Bobby Alexander would take control on the drive, as he carried the rock for 14 out of the 15 plays on the drive for Covington including the finishing touch, a tote from 5 yards out to account for the lone score in the third quarter on a drive that ate up 8:21 of the third quarter clock. Alexander ended up finishing as the top rusher in the contest, with 174 yards rushing on 24 carries.

Covington would get its final score in the final frame as Nathan Blei found Justin Williams for a 15-yard strike on fourth-and-4 to cap off an 8-play, 82-yard drive. This gave the Buccs two passing touchdowns on both of the attempted passes on the evening.

Covington will move on to face Marion Local in a Division VII, Region 26 matchup. With the loss, Notre Dame officially finished the season at 8-3.
