The Daily Times learned Tuesday that Wheelersburg has hired Portsmouth softball coach Teresa Ruby for the same position.

Ruby takes the position after Gary Bailey stepped down after the conclusion of the 2013 season. The Pirates — who in the last decade have compiled a 198-64 record with five SOC II, six district and one regional titles — finished 18-8 and were stopped by Chillicothe Huntington in the district semifinals. Bailey led Wheelersburg to a 2004 state runner-up finish as the Pirates were defeated 1-0 by Woodsfield Monroe Central in the championship game.

Wheelersburg athletic director Chris Porter felt her passion and competitiveness along with her credentials as a player and as a coach were factors in her selection. Ruby was offered the job last week and was accepted in Monday’s monthly school board meeting.

“Our program has been very successful and we feel Teresa will keep that trend going,” Porter said.

In her second season, Ruby led the Trojans this spring to a district finals appearance against the Huntsmen.

Portsmouth principal Doug Poage thanked Ruby for her service and wishes her the best of luck.

“We appreciated everything that Teresa did in two years here,” Poage said. “We’re sad to to see her go. We like to keep our coaches and we’re disappointed that she’s leaving.”

Ruby, a 1981 Clay graduate, led the Panthers to two state softball championships before moving on and playing for Morehead State.

Ruby was unavailable for comment when reached by The Daily Times.

A decision on the school’s plan to find Ruby’s successor could begin as soon as Wednesday. When school administrators do find the selection, the coach will lead the Trojans into a new era as they open up their own softball field on the Clark Athletic Complex after years of calling one of the diamonds near Branch Rickey Park home.

Portsmouth will open its new field Mar. 29 against North Adams. The OHSAA lists the Pirates’ season opener as Apr. 2 at Waverly.
