The Portsmouth Trojans came up on the short end of the score board against Gallia Academy losing 55-49 despite an admirable effort.

In a game better suited for a Sunday afternoon affair, there were five ties and six lead changes throughout the contest. Portsmouth quarterback Sky Oliver played his third-consecutive game as the Trojans’ signal caller, replacing incumbent starter Brandon Wedebrook who returned to action after missing the past couple of weeks with a lower back injury.

Oliver completed 18 passes on 29 attempts for 254 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. Wedebrook had an impact on the game, although it didn’t come from behind center. Wedebrook caught three passes for 69 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown reception in the opening quarter.

Oliver’s counterpart, Wade Jarrell, put on a clinic of his own for the 5-2 Blue Devils. Jarrell went 18-for-31 for 279 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. On the ground, Jarrell carried the ball 22 times for 190 yards and four scores.

Gallia Academy took a 28-21 lead into halftime thanks to a touchdown run by Jarrell with 19 ticks left on the clock. The Blue Devils score came on the heels of a Oliver touchdown run with 1 minute and 30 seconds remaining to draw the 2-5 Trojans into a tie with Gallia Academy.

In the third quarter, Portsmouth’s Johnnie Charles intercepted a errant pass from Jarrell and scampered into the endzone from 28 yards out to tie things at 28 a piece.

In the last frame, the Trojans and Blue Devils traded scoring punches until a Charles fumble allowed Gallia Academy to add to their 42-35 lead.

With the lead at 49-35 for the Blue Devils, Portsmouth embarked on a 6-play drive which culminated in an Oliver touchdown pass to Khalil Lattimore.

When the Blue Devils got the ball back, Jarrell wasted little time adding to his touchdown total as he raced down the right sideline for a 61-yard score.

With Gallia Academy leading 55-42, Oliver hit Charles on a screen pass from 15 yards to cut the deficit to six point with a minute left to go in the contest.

Zack DeLotell attempted an onside kick at the end but to no avail.

The Blue Devils had 569 yards of total offense while the Trojans recorded 386 yards.
