PORTSMOUTH — As the spring season attempts to rise above the reoccurring cold and snow flurries, there is a special season, spiritual in nature called Lent, 40 days leading up to the Easter holiday underway.
With the Lent season, Senior Pastor at Cornerstone United Methodist Church Tim Roth, has been preaching from a series of messages entitled, “When Love Speak, 7 Words From the Cross,” which expound upon Jesus’ last words before his crucifixion.
“During his time on the cross, Jesus spoke seven last statements. These statements are commonly referred to as the “The Seven Last Words,”” Roth said. “These words are shocking, powerful, riveting, and beautiful. It’s been said that a person’s last words provide a rare window into their soul. If this is true, then Jesus’ final words on the cross speak volumes about His love for us and His transforming power.”
The biblical passage of scripture which reveal Jesus’ last words include the following:
- Luke 23:34: Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.
- Luke 23:43: Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.
- John 19:23–27: Woman, behold your son. Son Behold your mother.
- Mark 15:34 My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?
- John 19:28: I thirst.
- John 19:30: It is finished. Luke 23:46:
- Luke 23:46: Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.
Reading the scriptures is one thing, understanding their magnitude is another.
“We decided to do this series at Cornerstone because even though we may have read these words many times before, we may not thoroughly understand the profound benefits that they offer our lives,” he said. ” This is also the season of Lent which is the 40 days leading up to Easter,” he said. “Our aim was to allow people to enter in to Jesus last hours on earth during this season and understand the depth of love that God has for us. Folks have really enjoyed the series and been drawn into Jesus last hours on earth through the messages.”
Another member of the ministerial staff at Cornerstone, Pastor Wayne Young, will be sharing a message on the humanity of Jesus. “I Thirst,” from John 19:28. this Sunday.
Pastor Tim will be sharing the final two messages on “A Word of Victory.” and a “Word of Trust.”
