The Chancel Choir of Second Presbyterian Church, under the direction of Dr. Stanley E. Workman, Jr., and the Portsmouth Civic Chorale, under the direction of Mr. Justin M. Wiget will present a free concert of Sacred Music at Second Presbyterian, 801 Waller St., Portsmouth on Sunday, Oct. 16, at 3 p.m.
In addition to the choirs, featured performers will include Varney Scholarship winner, Lynnsey Williams, soprano; and Dr. Jeremiah Martin, guest organist.
This seventh annual “Hour of Sacred Song” will be presented in memory of Charles P. Varney, who was a beloved, long-time music educator for the Wheelersburg Local and the Portsmouth City School Districts, Ohio University-Southern, and Shawnee State University.
In addition to his service as an educator in the Portsmouth area, Mr. Varney served as baritone soloist for the congregation of Temple B’nai Abraham, Director of Music for several churches in the tri-state area, conductor of the Portsmouth Area Male Chorus, and leader for several civic organizations. Mr. Varney was the founding conductor of the Portsmouth Civic Chorale, known originally as the Portsmouth Community Orchestra Chorale.
