The Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District (LSSWMD) is set to host its 8th annual Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) event on Saturday, Sept. 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
According to the LSSWMD, “every household generates hazardous waste, such as chemicals, cleaners, pesticides, solvents etc. Individual amounts may not seem large, but collectively, these amounts are significant. Recycling and disposing of these wastes are a problem for many and that’s why the Lawrence-Scioto SWMD is affording you the opportunity to dispose of your hazardous waste through our Household Hazardous Waste Event. Dow Chemical Company and Veolia Environmental Services have joined with the district to provide you with this opportunity.”
Items accepted at the event include scrap tires a limit of 10 tires per person, lead-acid batteries, motor oil, brake fluid, used antifreeze, paint, thinners, solvents, pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals, pharmaceuticals, electronics and computers.
Items not accepted at the event include explosives, ammunition, trash, needles or syringes, yard waste, heating oil tanks, fuel tanks and appliances.
At the 2013 HHW, 270 vehicles participated, disposing 16 batteries, 1,009 tires, 1,200 pounds of toxic solids, 1,200 pounds of oil 20 pounds of liquid medications, 69 pounds of medications and five pounds of unused sharps.
To get to the HHW on US 52, exit at the county road 1-A exit and follow the signs to the main entrance of Dow Chemical Company.
The event is open to residents of Scioto and Lawrence counties, proof of residency will be required. For more information the HHW or the Lawrence-Scioto County Solid Waste Management District visit www.lsswmd.org.
