The Southern Ohio Port Authority (SOPA) recently accepted the donation of seven properties within the city of Portsmouth from Home Federal Bank. The properties are located at 1834 5th St., 2134 6th St., 2136 6th St., 2230 8th St., 2120 9th St., 1123 17th St. and 2027 Charles St.

“SOPA has been lucky enough to receive a donation of seven properties from Home Federal Bank. Most of those properties are right next to properties already listed under Portsmouth’s Land Reutilization Program. We are looking at ways to box those properties together and sell a larger track of land,” said Jason Kester, SOPA executive director.

Kester said there are structures on a couple of properties. He said if the structures need to be removed it may be fruitful to partner with the land reutilization program and get the work done cheaper. He said he is also working with the city and village of New Boston on a partnership that may result in more dilapidated homes being razed in the area.

“SOPA, the county, the city, and the village are starting to look at properties that are tax delinquent, over grown and abandoned. We are trying to figure out ways to make it better. There are limited funds to tear some of those properties down. Maybe if we start consolidating some of what we’re doing into one program, we can partner together to spread the cost around a little bit,” Kester said.

Kester said there has already been interest show from companies looking to purchase some of the donated properties.

“Of the seven properties that have been donated, I have interest in all seven (from interested buyers),” Kester said. “Right now what I’m focusing on at SOPA, is helping businesses expand. Of the seven properties, everyone that interested in them are commercial or industrial users.”

He said of the seven parties interested in the properties, four of five are very interested and two parties are still in the discussion stage.
