Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday for a Shawnee State University student and former captain of the Jackson High School football team.
William J. (Jay) Spires, 19, of Jackson, was killed Tuesday night, when he lost control of a 2008 Hyundai while driving southbound on Ohio 139 in Jackson County.
Lieutenant Karla Taulbee of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said Spires’ vehicle went off the right side of the roadway, struck a guardrail, then went off the left side of the roadway, struck a guardrail, flipped over the guardrail and struck a tree. Spires was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jackson County Coroner.
Spires was best known as captain of the Jackson Ironmen football team in 2012, as well as being a member of the S.E.O.A.L championship team in 2010 and 2011. He was an all-academic conference selection twice.
Funeral services are schedule for Saturday at 4 p.m. at First Church of the Nazarene in Jackson with burial to follow at Fairmount Cemetery. Friends may call Friday 2-8 p.m. at the church.
A passenger in his vehicle, 19-year-old Steven Kearns, also of Jackson, was seriously injured and taken to Holzer Hospital in Jackson by Jackson County EMS.
