The West High School Alumni Association is planning for their annual West Alumni Banquet, which usually gathers hundreds, sometimes up to 500 members of the West High School alumni who celebrate their alma mater with social engagements, a dinner and the recognition of another person into the West High School Hall of Fame.

The banquet has been going on for seven years and this one will include members from 1939 to the most recent 2014 graduating class.

“I think it is extremely important to stay involved with your alma mater,” West High School Alumni Association President Kathy Ware said. “We’ve had these banquets to bring the alumni together and we’ve not once raised the cost. We want to keep it possible for people to continue coming, even with the economy and the state that it is in.”

All profit from the banquet will go directly towards the West High School Alumni Scholarship, which is $1,000 a year.

“The scholarship has been given away for 31 years and we are very happy to continue it on today,” Ware said.

The recipient of this year’s West High School Hall of Fame is being kept secret until the evening of the event. Last year’s award went to Pat Ciraso, who was superintendent at West for many years.

“She (Ciraso) was very pleased and had been involved in that district many, many years. Her teaching career even started at West, so she was quite pleased to receive that award and recognition,” Ware said.

The banquet will take place Saturday, Aug. 16. A social hour starts the event off at 5 p.m. Dinner will take place at 6 p.m. and includes the option of chicken or roast. The event is wrapped up after the honoring of the new addition to the West High School Hall of Fame. The cost is $15 and the dress code is casual.

Reservations must be made by August 6 and can be done so online at www.west.k12.oh.us, by contacting Kathy Ware at 740-858-2409 or by sending a check to Karen Ballengee at 13900 US Highway 52, West Portsmouth. Ware recommends contacting Ballengee for reservations, who is the West High School Alumni Association treasurer.
