In an announcement made last week, Jeremiah Eisley and Kathryn (Furman) Eisley were appointed as the new leadership of the Salvation Army Portsmouth Corps. It was announced in May that Mark and Elizabeth Ferreira, current leaders of The Salvation Army Portsmouth Corps., were being reassigned to Hempstead, New York, to be trained for service in rehabilitation ministries.

“They will be coming here as newlyweds with their first assignment, which is similar to the way Elizabeth and I did it,” Ferreira said.

When asked about the couple, Ferreira said, “I believe Jeremiah has served in the Navy and has had a long experience volunteering and working for the Salvation Army. Kathryn grew up in the Salvation Army.”

Ferreira said it’s going to be hard to say goodbye to Portsmouth.

“We’ve felt a lot of support, a lot of people have expressed their appreciation for us. The reality is that we have a lot of good friends here. I grew up moving around and one of the great things today that’s so much different from when I was younger is that through Facebook, we’ll still be able to be plugged in and still be able to continue some of the good friendships that we’ve formed.”

Ferreira said he has had a brief conversation with Lt.’s Eisley.

“I met them just briefly. Right after the announcement was made, when they were given their appointments,” Ferreira said. “We have not had a chance to speak because they were very busy with their wedding last Wednesday and I believe they are still on their honeymoon.”

Ferreira said he’s hopeful to have a conversation with the couple some time this week about Portsmouth.

“Everything that we’ve heard about them is that they are very talented officers. They really have a lot going for them. I’m excited for what they bring to the table, I think they will have fresh vision, ideas and a lot of good energy,” Ferreira said.

Ferreira said his last day will be Sunday, June 22, and the couple will report to the Portsmouth Corps on June 25. Ferreira said he will be delivering the Sunday morning message at the Portsmouth Corps. Following the message at 11 a.m. will be a picnic at Earl Thomas Conley Park in West Portsmouth.
