Portsmouth resident David Pettit has received yet another honor. Pettit was recently named the 59th drum major at The Ohio State University. That led Portsmouth City Council to present Pettit — who was accompanied by his father, Portsmouth physician, Dr. George Pettit — to present a proclamation.
“Whereas, since 1878 the drum major has been an integral part of the world famous Ohio State University Marching Band with a style all their own, the men and women that have led the Ohio State University Marching Band have done so both on and off the field and in the process built a tradition second to none. And whereas our own David Pettit has been named the 59th drum major for the Ohio State University Marching Band and has received the highest honor bestowed by the Ohio State University Marching Band as being the Most Inspirational Band Person, David is a 2010 graduate of Portsmouth High School and is currently a student at the Ohio State University. He is majoring in piano performance as well as the pre-med curriculum and plans to attend medical school following graduation,” Portsmouth Mayor Steve Sturgill read from the proclamation.
The proclamation said Pettit is an instrument rated pilot a state champion equestrian and a church organist.
“I, Steve Sturgill, Mayor of the city of Portsmouth, do hereby commend David Pettit for his great accomplishments and wish him continued success,” Sturgill read.
Sturgill told Pettit all of the citizens of the city are proud of what he has and will accomplish.
