State Electric Supply Company, 2045 8th Street in Portsmouth has received an Energy Efficiency Champion Award from AEP Ohio, a unit of American Electric Power, at an event held Wednesday at the Grange Insurance Audubon Center in Columbus.

State Electric Supply Company was recognized for its efforts to help their customers become more energy efficient. The company completed 144 projects in 2013, helping their customers to save more than 6.2 million kilowatt hours.

“It’s a pretty great honor,” State Electric Supply Manager Brent Mackie said. “We’re doing our best to promote that program throughout our area and try to get companies to appreciate the fact that there’s money to be saved and money to be received through AEP. So we’re doing a pretty good job of promoting that program.”

State Electric Supply Company was one of 14 businesses, organizations and educators honored from throughout the state at AEP Ohio’s second Energy Efficiency Awards event. AEP officials said the award recognizes AEP Ohio business customers and partners that have demonstrated a strong commitment to energy efficiency.

“Each of today’s award winners have made outstanding contributions to increasing energy efficiency within their organizations, reducing their energy use while helping them save money on energy costs, which in turn impacts the environment,” Pablo A. Vegas, AEP Ohio president and chief operating officer, said. “We hope their efforts will inspire other businesses to partner with AEP Ohio and take advantage of our energy efficiency programs.”

Mackie talked about a couple of the products available to help customers save money.

“LED lighting is our biggest push,” Mackie said. “But also variable frequency drives that reduce the amount a motor works and operates to cut costs.”

AEP Ohio officials said the company offers a variety of energy efficiency programs and discounts to help residential and business customers to waste less energy and start saving money. More information is available at AEPOhio.com/WasteLess (residential) or AEPOhio.com/Solutions (business).
