Haverhill Chemical Plant in eastern Scioto County reported a fire in a Phenol Tank Pump Unit Sunday evening shortly after 8 p.m. The fire was contained within 20 minutes and generated a black smoke that could be seen from U.S. 52 and across the Ohio River in Greenup, Ky.

Officials at the plant released the following statement on the fire through Jennifer Goddars, senior consultant with Ann Green Communications.

“At approximately 8:11 p.m. tonight (Sunday), an isolated fire occurred at Haverhill Chemicals. The on-site emergency response team quickly responded and extinguished. There were no injuries. There was no impact offsite,” the statement read. “The Green Township and Porter Township fire departments responded to the site and remained on standby, but the fire was out when they arrived. We appreciate their swift response.”

According to Haverhill Chemicals officials, several agencies including the Scioto County Emergency Management Agency, the Ohio Emergency Response Center and the National Emergency Response Center, were notified of the fire.

“At this time, the cause of the incident is still under investigation,” the news release said. “We are committed to the safety of our employees and our community.”

This is the second, though unrelated, incident that has occurred this month at that plant. On April 4, at around 10:30 p.m., Jim Morrison, a worker at the plant was killed when he left his normal work site and went to help fix a pipe that was stuck. It was that pipe that exploded, killing Morrison. Family members said several years earlier, Jim Morrison’s brother, Bob Morrison was also injured at the plant.

Haverhill Chemical LLC, an affiliate of Goradia Capital LLC, was formed to acquire the Haverhill phenol plant from Sunoco and is headquartered in Houston, Texas. Goradia Capital acquires manufacturing plants or participates in significant projects in the petrochemical industry. Goradia Capital is affiliated with Vinmar International Ltd. of Houston, a global polymer and petrochemical marketing and distribution company with more than 26 offices in 23 countries. Goradia acquired the site in 2011 and formed Haverhill Chemicals LLC.
