The 48th annual Trout Derby is set to take place this weekend at Turkey Creek Lake in Shawnee State Park starting at 6 a.m. on Saturday.
“We’ve doing this now for 48 years and it brings the community together. If you’ve ever been there it’s a festive atmosphere and this is something we look forward to doing as a club, every year,” said Kenny Scarberry, Jaycee’s president. “We also have the kid derby going on (during the Trout Derby). It means a lot to see the smile on a kids face when they catch a fish for the first time.”
He said some kids will be able to participate through the Passport to Fishing Program.
Scarberry prizes will be awarded in several age categories with this years grand prize a gas grill.
“We are hoping for a large turnout like in years past”, Scarberry said. “It has been a difficult year raising funds to promote this project. The economy has caused donors to cut back or eliminate charitable donations, so this year has been the most difficult by far. We have managed to get it done, with an extremely tight budget. Hopefully everyone will have a great time, enjoy the weather, fishing and camaraderie. The weather is guaranteed, and so is the fishing. Hopefully it will be great weather, and better fishing,” Scarberry said in a released statement.
Scarberry said it’s estimated that 1,000 people annually participate in the event.
“Fishing starts at 6 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. with the awards ceremony starting at 3 p.m,” Scarberry said. “We have a band planing in between two and three.”
Music will be provided by Mothman, who plays a medley of 1960s and 1970s songs with a few newer songs. For more information about the Jaycee’s visit them at 2033 Gallia Street in Portsmouth. Meeting nights are the first and third Wednesday’s of each month at 7:00 PM.
