Greenup County, Ky., Sheriff Keith Cooper is warning area residents of a phone scam that could cost them hundreds of dollars.

“We’ve had half a dozen people come in, and probably 10 on the phone,” Cooper said. “There is some individual who is calling people in Greenup County and identifying himself as Lieutenant John Roberts from the warrant squad of the Greenup County Sheriff’s Office. And he’s telling people- ‘you didn’t show up for grand jury; you didn’t show up for court, and if you don’t pay me x number of dollars - some of them $400, some of them $500, some of them $300.”

Cooper said the scammer is telling people to send him a certified check or money order for the amount to keep him from serving them with a warrant.

Cooper said, first of all, he doesn’t have a warrant squad. He said the actions of the scammer also has the possibility of causing illness to his victims.

“We had a lady in here who almost had a heart attack,” Cooper said. “She had never even been to the courthouse except to pay her taxes. Her husband was having to hold her up.”

Cooper said he is giving people a phone number along with his name.

“He’s basically just trying to extort people, and we are working on that right now,” Cooper said. “If you receive a call from somebody identifying themself as being Lieutenant John Roberts from the warrant squad with the Greenup County Sheriff’s Office it’s a scam. It’s just a thief trying to extort money from people.”

Cooper said anyone who has had contact with that subject should call the Greenup County Sheriff’s Office at 606-473-7037 with any information they may have. Cooper warned residents not to give any of their information or to make any transactions.

Cooper said an investigation is being conducted by the sheriff’s office and the U.S. Secret Service.
