A Portsmouth man has been charged with the armed robbery of a local store.
Jonathan D. Spears, 22, is charged with aggravated robbery, a first degree felony, after being taken into custody by local authorities in connection with the robbery of the Super Quick store on Scioto Trail in Portsmouth.
An employee at Super Quick reported to Portsmouth Police officers that at about 3:07 a.m. Sunday, a white male subject wearing a face covering entered the store and approached the counter. The employee told the subject to uncover his face and the man refused. The white male subject then pointed a handgun at her and demanded the money from the cash register. The employee gave the subject the money and he fled the store.
Officers of the police department’s midnight shift searched in the direction that the suspect was seen fleeing and were able to recover valuable evidence in that robbery. At about 8:40 p.m. Tuesday, officers of the police department’s afternoon shift located and arrested Spears for the robbery.
Spears was taken to the Portsmouth Police Department where he was charged with aggravated robbery. Spears reportedly declined to make a statement to officers and was transported to the Scioto County Jail.
Portsmouth Police Operations Captain Lynn Brewer said aggravated robbery carries a maximum penalty of up to eleven years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000. Since a firearm was used in the commission of the crime, an additional three-year sentence may be imposed by the court.
The case will be presented to the Scioto County grand jury where Brewer says additional charges may be filed.
