GREENUP, Ky. - According to Greenup County Health Department (GCHD), someone from area code 404 has been posing as a health department official, and telling Greenup County residents they have been awarded large sums of money, and then asking for their personal information.
Paul Hunt GCHD Public Services Health Coordinator, said they have been making every effort to make the public cognizant of the calls concerning money to Greenup County residents did not originate from the GCHD, and are part of a scam.
“We have received reports that someone is calling local residents, and claiming to be with the Greenup County Health Department, telling them that they have been selected to be awarded a large sum of money, and after that they start asking for some personal information,” Hunt said.
He said this is not the first time that the GCHD has dealt with such an issue, and that a similar problem occurred in the past.
“It rarely happens. From what I understand this happened before I came to work here, so that is more than two years ago. I was told that this does come up every once in a while,” he said.
To counteract the scam, he said they have utilized social media to inform the public of the scam which has made a tremendous difference.
“We posted the information on our Facebook page, and within 24 hours it had reached more than 4,000 people, so we are very pleased with how that has worked, and whatever other ways we can get the word out is very important as well,” he said.
According to Hunt, the Greenup County Sheriff’s office is investigating the scam, but no arrests have in regard to it as of yet. Any information regarding the scam should be reported to the Greenup County Sheriff’s Department at 606-473-9833.
