HealthNet 4/MedFlight 7 will be hosting its Sixth Annual Tri-State Fire/EMS Education Day in Portsmouth on Saturday, April 5, at Shawnee State University. According to event organizers, this conference is unique because continuing education hours are offered to participants.

“The conference is free to all fire and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel from Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky. We are expecting about 200 fire and EMS personnel to be there this year,”said Amanda Ball, Outreach/Social Media Coordinator for MedFlight.

She said one of the things that makes this conference unique is the fact that classes are offered for fire and EMS personnel at the same conference.

“MedFlight 7 is the first base in that area that is certified to practice in three states (Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky), with is rare for EMS,” Ball said. “They are offering continuing education credits and its something you would need to keep your license as a EMS professional.”

She said continuing education credits are offered to anyone attending the conference.

“The conference is free and will be held at the Shawnee State University Library. Because EMS and fire departments are largely separate, there’s going to training for both. It will be a full day of fire training and a full day of EMS training,” Ball said.

She said the conference will feature speakers from The Ohio State University, Ohio Health, the Ohio Fire Academy will be bringing their flash over simulator. Ball said throughout the conference, fire and EMS personnel will be put through different training scenarios. Classes will also be offered that are taught professionals in the field.

“We also have a vantage 1972 ambulance that will be stocked as if it were 1972. This way folks can see what there was to work with back in the day,” Ball said. “We will also have two helicopters landing at 10:30 a.m. if the public wants to come out to see them.”
