Democratic candidate for Ohio Auditor of State John Patrick Carney recently visited Portsmouth to attend a fundraising event. Carney spoke exclusively with the Daily Times about his campaign.

When asked about his background, Carney said, “I am the eleventh of 12 kids, I put myself through school at The Ohio State University, I have been a health care attorney for the last 14 years,” Carney said. “I ran for the legislature with the idea that evidence based ideas would create bipartisanship. I was elected to the legislature and realized as a result of redistricting evidence based ideas don’t drive bipartisanship decision making.”

Carney said while he’s been in the legislature he has been an advocate for redistricting.

“The auditor sits in the position to show how resources are being used and sits on the board that redraws redistricting lines,” Carney said. “I think that position (Auditor) can be a watchdog for the tax payers on what is theirs and can install greater accountability and better outcomes of the government.”

Carney said for those reasons and others he is seeking the office. If elected, he said, he would put a focus on using resources to make sure taxpayers are getting a good return on their investment.

“Those are some big tasks, when you look at the state budget 47 percent of the tax dollars are used on health care budget items and yet we’ve never had anyone in the role of auditor who does what I do, which is knows how we can and can not spend federal and state tax money on health care items,” Carney said. “There is a lot that can be done to driver greater efficiency in how we spend those health care dollars.”

He acknowledged the enormity of those tasks, but Carney believes he is uniquely equipped to take them on.
