The 5th annual First Responder and Veterans Appreciation Parade is schedule to take place May 17 in the streets of New Boston.
“We’re kicking it up a notch this year,” said Mike Bell, event spokesman. “I have Dr. Brad Wenstrup (2nd Congressional District), Dr. Terry Johnson (Ohio House of Representatives 90th District) as guest speakers and Gov. John Kasich is scheduled to be there if nothing else happens.”
Bell said there will be a total of five awards given out at this years event.
“The governor will be giving out an award to the oldest living combat veteran in Scioto County,” Bell said.
When asked who the award will be given to Bell said, “I have the name of a gentleman who is 92 years old. But, I’m going to check my resources and make sure that that’s the person.”
He said something new they are trying this year is holding nominations for the recipients of the public service and community service awards.
“We are looking for nominations from the public and from their peers. The nominations will then be reviewed by a committee who will select the recipients,” Bell said. “We will be running a nomination form on Facebook and they will be distributed to emergency responder companies, fire departments among other places.”
He said there will be two public service awards given out this year, two community service awards and the oldest living veteran award.
More information about the event will be made available as the event draws closer.
