Pound Rockout Workout is ideal for those who desire to shed pounds. Southern Ohio Medical Center’s Life Center in Portsmouth will host this special fitness event on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 4 to 5 p.m.
Debbie Kielmar, group fitness supervisor at SOMC Life Center, said she is looking forward to the Pound Rockout Workout event.
“I am hosting a master class which will be a 45 minute workout. Pound Rockout Workout is the name of the program, and it is a full cardio jam session that combines some light resistance with constant, stimulated drumming. So you use drumsticks that are weighted, a quarter of a pound a piece I believe. That is why it is called Pound, because you will be pounding on the floor,” she said.
Desiree Harmon of Paintsville, Ky., an A.F.A.A certified group fitness instructor and personal trainer, will be the facilitator of the Pound class.
“We are bringing Desiree in. She actually owns her own workout facility down in Paintsville. She started a Pound workout at her facility in the summer when numbers are usually down, but she was filling her facility with 50 to 60 people in the middle of the summer,” Kielmar said.
Kielmar said the Pound workout will entail a variety of exercises.
“Pound infuses some cardio, Pilates, isometric and plyometric exercises. There will be some isometric poses, like a yoga pose, and blends it all together into a really hardcore workout,” she said.

According to Kielmar, Pound is an intense exercise program, even more so than the popular Zumba workout. She said the Pound facilitator assured her that 45 minutes is sufficient time for Pound participants because of it’s intensity.
“I asked her if she wanted more time than the 45 minutes, and she said, ‘I guarantee you, you won’t want any more of this than that. She promises that will burn a lot of calories in those 45 minutes,” she said.
The event is open to the public. General admission is $10, and $5 for Life Center members. SOMC Life Center members that come to the Pound Rockout Workout will receive extra points for the Fitness Challenge.
