When you kick off your holiday shopping season, make sure you don’t forget the small local businesses. To make sure you don’t forget them, Main Street Portsmouth is staging Small Business Saturday on Nov. 30. The day after Thanksgiving has become known as “Black Friday.” In addition to “Black Friday” we now have “Cyber Monday,” in which people do their Christmas shopping on line.

Sarah Surina, Director of Main Street Portsmouth said in years past, during this massive sale weekend, small businesses were suffering. To fix that issue, in 2010, American Express launched “Small Business Saturday,” which is held the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Surina said it is an initiative to bring more attention to local small businesses.

Main Street Portsmouth along with Yost Engineering and the Chamber of Commerce are all working together to help promote that day.

“We’ll be doing several things to promote the day including advertising and signage for their (downtown businesses) windows. That is the same day as the Ohio State vs. Michigan football game so we will have ‘designated stations’ where you can stop and watch the game,” Surina said. “It’s a day we celebrate the Shop Small movement to drive shoppers to local merchants, so they can expect sales, discounts, special promotions.”

Surina said those places will be Port City Café & Pub, Garage Café, and the Portsmouth Brew Pub – each holding sales and discounts. There will also be stamp cards at many stores, and when a card is stamped in five stores, shoppers will qualify for prizes.

“Help make Nov. 30 the biggest day of the year for small businesses,” Surina said.
