Southern Ohio Correctional Facility Warden Donald Morgan says the plans concerning the harvesting of trees from property adjacent to that facility remain in the hands of officials at the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.

“Legal is looking over all the legal issues pertaining to harvesting that timber,” Morgan said in an exclusive interview with the Daily Times Friday. “I’m on standby waiting for Legal to give me the up-to-date version on proceeding with that.”

In May, Morgan said the total acreage identified to be harvested is 177 acres. He said 124 acres will be select cut and 50 acres clear cut. Morgan said SOCF owns 1,630 acres, 69 of those acres are within the fence.

“There hasn’t been much activity with it, but Legal is looking at all options,” Morgan said. “Steven Young out of our department is handling it, and naturally the Department (ODRC) wants to ensure that if and when the timber is harvested, it is harvested in compliance with all of the county rules and regulations as well as the state. So we’ve got multiple agencies and the Legal staff looking at it.”

Morgan said the Legal staff has been in contact with Scioto County Engineer Craig Opperman.

“So all of the information we received from Mr. Opperman was sent to Legal,” Morgan said. “Those requests were reviewed, and they are currently in communications with him as far as I know. “

In addition to the 177 acres, OSCF has 600 acres that is farm land that runs along U.S. 23, and 580 acres of pasture and hay fields.

“That’s all the land that is on the north side of Cook Road and all that down behind the sewage treatment plant,” Morgan said in May. “So once you do the math, you will find out there’s only 394 acres total that has timber standing on it.”
