The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office is not releasing the name of the man who was shot a man breaking into a building on his property in the early morning hours Wednesday.

Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless and the Coal Grove Police Department are investigating an early morning shooting that occurred in the 600 block of Washington Street in Coal Grove.

Lawless said the Sheriff’s Office received a telephone call at about 6 a.m. advising that a homeowner had a man in his back yard that was in the process of breaking into his storage building. The Coal Grove Police were already investigating a report of a prowler several houses from his location and responded immediately. Lawless said upon arrival of the officer it was discovered that the homeowner had just shot the suspect. The suspect was still at the scene and an ambulance was called.

The suspect was identified as Brandon Blaike Danner, 18, of 201 Duty Drive in Coal Grove.

The homeowner advised that he heard someone breaking into his storage building, so he went to the building, and there he found a man had forced the doors open and had removed a motorcycle from the building. The homeowner was reportedly armed with a small caliber handgun and he said he confronted the suspect who allegedly became aggressive with the homeowner and claimed to have a knife. The homeowner said the suspect lunged toward him, at which time he shot the man four times in the upper torso with a .380 caliber handgun.

Lawless said the suspect was treated at the scene by the Lawrence County EMS, then transported the Cabell Huntington Hospital where he underwent surgery for the gunshot wounds. He was still in the hospital Wednesday afternoon.

Lawless said Danner will be charged with breaking and entering, a felony of the fifth degree. He said other charges are pending and will be added as the investigation continues.

The homeowner is not currently facing any charges and is claiming self-defense. Lawless said his name is not being released at this time because he said it is too early in the investigation, and that information is considered part of the law enforcement confidential investigatory records. He said the victim also fears retribution.

Lawless said once the investigation is complete it will be presented to Lawrence County Prosecutor Brigham Anderson for his review in determining what charges will be filed.
