Residents encouraged to attend committee meetings

Portsmouth City Clerk Diana Ratliff has released a tentative schedule of City Council committee meetings for the month of November.
On Nov. 12, the Parks and Recreation Committee, chaired by Second Ward Councilman Rich Saddler, will meet at 6 p.m. at American Legion Post 23 in Portsmouth. That committee is responsible for parks, playground and greenways, and the recreational programming activities and facilities. It is also responsible for city owned property. Key responsibilities include recreation and cultural affairs, service department, and city-owned property.
On Nov. 13, the Economic Development Committee, chaired by First Ward Councilman Kevin W. Johnson, will meet at 6 p.m. at Port City Pub. The committee handles all issues relating to efforts to aid economic advancement and provide for a suitable living environment for all citizens; develop solutions and goals for creating urban innovation and design. Key responsibilities are economic and community affairs, Engineering Department services, housing and neighborhood services, and a city comprehensive plan.
On Nov. 14, the Legal and Legislative Committee, chaired by Fifth Ward Councilman Gene Meadows, will meet at 5:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers. That committee is responsible for maintaining the City Code and Charter, Council Rules of Order, State Legislative actions and City Council Code of Ethics. It is also responsible for cooperating with the City Solicitor’s office, all issues relating fire and police, 911 services and other actions involving the new responsibilities of dealing with Homeland Security.
On Nov. 19, the Budget and Finance Committee, chaired by Sixth Ward Councilman and President of Council Steve Sturgill, will meet at 5 p.m. in City Council chambers. That committee is involved with all matters relating to revenues and expenditures pursuant to the actions of the mayor and City Council. Key responsibilities are the General Fund and Enterprise Funds and the Audit Review.
On Nov. 20, the Personnel and Performance Committee, chaired by Third Ward Councilman Kevin E. Johnson, will meet at 5 p.m. in the City Engineer’s Office. That committee is responsible for relating to employment, employee relationships, human resources and equal opportunity provisions, provide objective information on the operations of government programs and develop accountability to the public. Key responsibilities include personnel, public relations, state and federal programs.
Ratliff said no date has been set for the Public Works, Codes and Standards Committee, chaired by Fourth Ward Councilman Jim Kalb. That committee is responsible for all issues involving construction and maintenance of roads, sewers and necessary services dealing with water and solid waste management. Key responsibilities include sanitation, sewage, streets and water.
Ratliff said the public is invited and urged to attend the meetings and to give their input concerning any issues discussed at those meetings.
