According to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, Scioto Water, Inc. was recently awarded $10.5 million in loans aimed at improving service.

In released information the EPA, the funds will be used to help make water distribution and storage improvements and construct new wells and a new water treatment plant.

“The East System project is expected to ensure a safe, reliable and cost-effective public water supply for Scioto County customers in Green, Porter and Vernon townships and Lawrence County customers in Hamilton and Elizabeth townships,” according to information provided by the EPA.

According to the EPA, the scope of the work is set to include an upgrade to “its East System by adding a new storage tank and larger water mains. Scioto Water also will develop a well field and construct a new water treatment plant. Construction has begun and will be complete in mid-2014.”

Jeff Spradlin, General Manager with Scioto Water was excited over the developments.

“This is going to be a good thing for the people we serve. Once finished we’ll be able to produce water that we are currently buying from the city of Portsmouth for our east end system or at least 98 percent of it,” Spradlin said. “We have a a couple of small systems that are to far away from our current pipes to be able to tie in.”

When asked about a project timetable, Spradlin said the system will take about a year to construct.

Since its inception in 1998, the Ohio Water Supply Revolving Loan Account has provided an estimated $1 billion in loans for compliance-related improvements to public water systems.

According to the Ohio EPA website, (www.epa.state.oh.us) the Ohio Water Supply Revolving Loan Account, has saved public water systems more than $243 million in interest. Additionally, the WSRLA can provide technical assistance to public water systems in a variety of areas from the planning, design and construction of improvements to enhancing the technical, managerial and financial capacity of these systems.”
