The annual Senior Olympics will convene Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at Scioto County Fairgrounds beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Linda Slone, the advisor/coordinator of the event, said she came up with the idea when she was employed with Pleasant Hill Manor in 2000.

“This was started in the year 2000, when I was asked to put together an event, and at that time the Olympics were going on Australia, so I tried to think of something that give our seniors something meaningful to do,” Slone said.

Slone said she is no longer employed with Pleasant Hill Manor, but was allowed to continue to head up the Senior Olympics event.

Slone said she is looking forward to the Olympics, which will include participants in facilities from 15 different counties.

The Pledge of Allegiance will be sung by Ryanne Parker, with prayer by Rev. Clarence Parker.

Al Oliver is scheduled to be the speaker.

Slone said competing in the games provides a sense of pride for the participants.

“Participating in the Olympics allows the seniors to feel accomplished, and to be cheered on, to feel that sense of winning. Everyone is a winner, everyone that pushes a checker, or rolls a bowling ball, they are a winner for the simple fact that they are trying,” Slone said.

She also said providing support to the seniors is the most important aspect of the event.

“It is not just about the games, it allows all of us that come to show the seniors our support for them. It also shows them that we care for them, and we realize the value that they have added to our communities,” Slone said.

The doors will open for the 2013 Senior Olympics at 8:30 a.m. with the Spirit March led by “Mickey” Wendy Williams.
