The Christian Outreach Association is inviting the public to a Christian Music Jamboree, Saturday, Aug. 24 from 1-3 p.m. at the Christian Outreach Center, 1525 Poplar St., in Portsmouth.

“You can expect to hear some good Christian music,” Executive Director Eugene Collins said. “You’ll enjoy great talents of the Christians in our community.”

Collins said anyone who would like to register to participate, or who knows a Christian singer or group, that wishes to perform, can email christianoutreachcenter@hotmail.com, or they can call 740-351-0372. Free food and drinks will be provided, thanks to generous donations to the event.

Collins said the Christian Outreach Association was founded in 1981 with the intent of “People Helping People” as their main theme, built around John 3:16, which reads - “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

He said the goals of the association were to coordinate and establish programs with educational and therapeutic help to individuals and groups that were needy, handicapped, abused and homeless.

“By helping those in need to become self-sufficient, they were also helping the community in having make better capable citizens less dependent upon others to supply their needs,” Collins said. “This help was to be offered not for profit, yet to promote rehabilitation to those in need without cost.”

Collins said the people they help would, in turn, volunteer their time, concern and compassion.

“We have seen great success for these youth’s lives,” Collins said. “We now are hoping to establish a pilot community work program that we hope to see spread into a lot of communities. It however requires us to gain up front money to cover conversation insurance and the cost of uniforms. We are in the process of seeking this start-up grant. Information is available on the work program’s website, www.communityworkprograms.com.

During the concert, prizes will be given out every 30 minutes and anyone needing information or directions can call 740-727-5429.
