When it comes to Mexican food, Portsmouth will soon have another restaurant to choose from, at Sonora Mexican Grille, located at 1701 Grandview Ave. The owner, Martin Miranda, said he is excited about his new restaurant.

Named after his native land, Sonora, Miranda said the venture has been a long time coming. He resides in Portsmouth with his wife Tonyan Miranda, son Julion, and daughter Brittany.

“I moved here to Portsmouth in 2006. I have seen this building sitting for a lot of years. I even tried to lease it once. It was very difficult trying to locate the owners. When I finally did make contact with them, I’d decided not to pursue it,” he said.

He said his desire to lease the building was renewed after another local restuarant closed down.

“I got the keys for the building on March 16, and started working on it,” he said.

Sonora Mexican Grille will offer a menu of organic, Mexican food, something, according to Miranda, that will set his restaurant apart in the community. The restaurant will appeal to adults who desire alcoholic beverages, providing a variety of beer and liquor types.

Miranda said the grand opening should take place soon, as they move through the preliminary steps required to open a restaurant.

“We don’t have a date just yet. I will have an inspection Tuesday, and after that I will get my full license,” he said.

The inside, as well as the outside, is decorated with colorful, bright colors, something he said was done purposefully.

“We wanted to use every color that we could to make it feel like a real Mexican restaurant,” he said.

The restaurant is also equipped with murals on some of the walls which were painted by Cindy Gibson of Cindy’s Murals out of South Webster.

He said he already has his staff in place, and when be ready to go on opening day. Although he is very excited about his new business, he also is realistic about challenges that he may face.

“We know that we are located in a residential area pretty much, and we are hoping to get business from the hospital in the mornings, but we don’t know how it is going to be in the evenings,” he said.

He said he is looking forward to serving the community, and offer, great food for everyone to enjoy.
