A Portsmouth man faces seven felony charges after being indicted by a Scioto County grand jury in the death of a Kentucky man two years ago.
Donald Lugretia Richardson, Jr., 49, of Portsmouth, is charged with murder, felonious assault, arson, two counts of tampering with evidence, having weapons while under disability and gross abuse of a corpse. Scioto County Prosecutor Mark Kuhn said a firearm specification was also added to the murder and felonious assault charges.
Richardson was arrested almost exactly two years after the body of Donald Kidd, 51, of Ashland, Ky., was found on May 9, 2011 in a burned-out car in the 1000 block of 15th Street in Portsmouth at around 1 a.m. when the Portsmouth Fire Department was called to the scene after someone had seen the vehicle on fire.
When Portsmouth Police Chief Robert Ware made the announcement of the arrest, he said he had been in contact with the victim’s family the night before to tell them about the arrest which came as the result of a secret indictment. He then made a plea to the public for anyone with information about the case.
“We believe there are people out there that have information that will be pertinent to this case and we would like to hear from those people,” Ware said.”I believe there is information out there and for whatever reason people have been reluctant to come forward with. We need to hear from those people. It is very important to the family that they know what happened. And our officers and agents from all the various agencies have stuck with it and we’re one step closer to providing that closure for these family members.”
