A West Portsmouth man arrested for beating his grandmother over cigarettes has been indicted by the Scioto County grand jury. Joshua Brian Horton, 29, of 1430 15th St., West Portsmouth, was indicted on two counts of kidnapping, and one each of felonious assault, possessing a weapon while under disability and attempted aggravated arson.

Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini said the Scioto County Sheriff’s Dispatch received a 911 call in December of 2013 from a residence in West Portsmouth stating that an elderly lady had been attacked by her grandson and she was bleeding and was covered in Kerosene. Donini said deputies and detectives responded and checked the victim and took her statement. He said family members took the woman to Southern Ohio Medical Center emergency room for treatment of her injuries.

Donini said deputies were told that the grandson, Horton, lived with the victim and that an argument had occurred between the two over cigarettes and became violent. Deputies were unable to locate the grandson that evening, but he was located and arrested the following evening and taken into custody.

Horton was held in the Scioto County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

Donini said anyone with information about the case should contact Detective Denver Triggs at 740-355-8245. He said all calls are kept confidential.
