A Scioto County man has been sentenced to 17 1/2 years in prison. Anthony Huff, 31, of Otway was convicted Wednesday on four counts of burglary, one count of attempted burglary and four counts of theft of credit cards.

Scioto County Prosecutor Mark Kuhn said the case stemmed from incidents that took place in the early morning hours of July 16 of this year on Tipton Lane in Stout, Ohio.

According to Kuhn, the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office received calls on that day after a security alarm woke occupants of a residence on Tipton Lane. Upon investigation, deputies said they discovered multiple incidents along the street. Kuhn said those incidents involved Huff and his accomplice entering various cars and attached garages to steal. Scioto County Sheriff’s detective Jodi Conkel handled the investigation. Conkel testified during the trial.

“There were a lot of these burglaries, and they stopped when those people were arrested,” Conkel said.

The state’s case was presented by Assistant Scioto County Prosecutors Shane Tieman and Danielle Parker. The jury heard two-and-a-half days of testimony and arguments before beginning deliberations. Kuhn said the testimony showed that all five victims and their families were home with family members at the time the crimes were committed. The jury deliberated for two hours before returning the guilty verdicts.

During sentencing arguments, Tieman argued that the impact of the crimes on the five separate victims justified a stern sentence. After he heard the arguments of counsel, Scioto County Common Pleas Judge Howard H. Harcha, III, sentenced Huff to 17 1/2 years in the custody of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.

Kuhn said the verdict could not have been attained without the hard work of the Sheriff’s office and the cooperation of residents of Tipton Lane. Huff will remain in the Scioto County Jail until his transport to the Ohio Penitentiary at Orient.
