A man convicted of aggravated murder in Scioto County has reportedly committed suicide at Ross Correctional Facility in Chillicothe. Kimball Kenaga, 47, was serving 33 to life on charges of aggravated Murder, aggravated arson and on unrelated charges ofaggravated burglary and burglary out of Scioto County.

“Kimball Kenaga plead guilty to a Bill of Information for killing Joe Browning in West Portsmouth on Nov. 22, 2006,” Scioto County Prosecutor Mark Kuhn said. “His sentencing was Dec. 20, 2006. It was an aggravated murder, aggravated arson with a firearms spec (specification).”

Kuhn said his office had been monitoring the situation at Browning’s residence at the time he was killed.

“There were allegations of drug trafficking,” Kuhn said.

A Ross Correctional officer said he was winding down operation in the institution’s Mental Health building when he noticed Kenaga was not in the area, but his shirt was hanging on a chair in the hallway. Another CO went to the porter closet at the end of the hall and tried to open the door. The door would not open, so that CO did get the door open enough to see inside. Officers said they saw Kenaga sitting in the water basis area with a cord around his neck.

Officers yelled for help and a nurse responded to help the CO get in the door. They reportedly noticed a vacuum cleaner cord wrapped around Kenaga’s neck, and attached to the sprinkler head and down to the door knob. RCI medical staff was called as well as an outside ambulance. The staff continued treatment until the ambulance arrived. Kenaga was transported to Adena Regional Hospital in Chillicothe where Kenaga was pronounced dead.

Kuhn said he received a call from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections last week, and his office was in the process of notifying the victim’s family of Kenaga’s death.

Kenaga was also serving time for burglary out of Ross County and was on his fifth term in prison.
