Art teacher is selected for Ohio Portfolio project

Portsmouth High School Art teacher April Deacon has been invited to participate in Ohio Portfolio. Deacon has taught art for seven of her 11 years of teaching at Portsmouth High School.
“I am very excited. I submitted a piece to the Ohio Portfolio project and they accepted my piece and so I will be going there to make 50 prints of that with these professional print makers,” Deacon said.
Deacon said she has been invited to participate in what is called Ohio Portfolio by a man named Ron Pizzuti who is a Columbus native that was named one of the top two art collectors in the world by Art News Magazine.
Linda Gall of Columbus was appointed by Pizzuti to coordinate the Ohio Portfolio project said she is thrilled to have Deacon as a part of the Ohio Portfolio project.
Gall said the selection process for Ohio Portfolio participants was done by Pizzuti and a committee.
“They had a first round, and then a second round. April is one of the artists that made it through the second round, and then she made a final proposal for her print was accepted,” Gall said.
Gall said Deacon’s work is commendable, which is what granted her a spot in the Ohio Portfolio.
“We thought that April’s submission to the Ohio Portfolio was delightful. It is just a beautiful concept, very personal,” Gall said.
Deacon said she currently preparing for her first trip to New York City, where she will enter the next phase for Ohio Portfolio.
“They are sending the work of each artist that is included in Ohio Portfolio to New York. I am going to go to New York, and I am going to work with two print makers, Luther Davis, and Glen Baldridge,” Deacon said.
According to Deacon, Davis and Baldridge are two professional print makers and founders of Forth Estate in New York.
Deacon said she will be doing silkscreen printing based on her own work.
The highlight of the Ohio Portfolio project is to have the artist’s work to be showcased in the Joseph Hotel.
According to Gall, the Joseph Hotel is a high-end art hotel set to open in late 2014 in the Short North area of Columbus.
“We are really looking forward to seeing what her prints look like and have them hang in the Joseph Hotel. Mr. Pizzuti is commissioning a group of Ohio artists to do prints for this hotel.
Deacon said her passion for art and teaching it to her students has continued to flourish as she goes deeper into her career.
“I think that art is really important for everyone in any field. I think that it is important to foster in every child,” Deacon said.
Deacon said she is looking forward to all of the new opportunities in her field and plans to continue to hone her artistic abilities and expand her love for art.
