Organizers with the Main Street Portsmouth Farmer’s Market held their first Farm to Table Dinner at the Southern Ohio Medical Center, Friends Center Monday evening.

While at the dinner, participants learned about the importance of thinking locally when purchasing produce.

All of the items served during the dinner were made from ingredients found at the farmer’s market.

“I see a lot of faces here that we see weekly (at the Farmer’s Market). As we promoted this dinner all of the food that’s been served has come from the vendors of our farmer’s market. So, you’re eating local fresh food,” said Laurel DeAtley Promotions Committee Chairperson.

DeAtley encouraged those in attendance to get involved with the market.

“There is always room for more vendors at the market. As the market increases we have more and more people attending. If you enjoy farming or if you have something you like to make, we’d love to have you.” she said.

DeAtley said there are six more weeks of the Main Street Portsmouth Farmer’s Market remaining.

Sarah Surina, Executive Director of Main Street Portsmouth and Farmer’s Market Manager explained to those in attendance how the farmer’s market fits into the mission of the organization.

“Main Street is a nonprofit organization, we help to promote business, provide services along with helping to preserve the history of our community. The farmer’s market fits into that in that, when we build our community up each Saturday morning (of farmer’s market).”

Surina said it has been the community that’s kept the enthusiasm for the going which has lead to its success.

The Main Street Portsmouth Farmers Markets are held on Roy Rogers Esplanade every Saturday from 9 a.m. - Noon.
