New Boston Police arrested a Portsmouth man on Friday, after seeing him exit a the former New Boston Pizza Hut building with a cart filled with allegedly stolen scrap metal.
According to the New Boston Police Department, Officer Brian Reed was on patrol at about 11:16 a.m. on Friday. He was checking around the Pizza Hut building located in the 3200 block of Rhodes Avenue where he observed an open door and then came upon a male suspect exiting the building, who was pushing out a shopping cart full of metal shelves and metal racks, and other items.
The male was detained and identified as Brandon Keaton, age 18, of 1603 High St., in Portsmouth. From this investigation, police learned that Keaton has been entering the building over the last several days and tearing out all metal items, pipes, and wiring and then selling the items at a local scrap yard.
Keaton was arrested and charged with breaking and entering; a felony in the fifth degree. He was transported to New Boston Police Department for booking and processing, and was later transferred to the Scioto County Jail where he will appear at Portsmouth Municipal Court on Monday morning.
New Boston Police will be giving the case to the Scioto County Prosecutor Office for Grand Jury proceeding, and the New Boston Police Department will have additional criminal charges for indictment against Keaton, and possibly on several other individuals who may have been involved in this crime.
