Workshop series reviews new teaching standards

NEW BOSTON (Sept. 8, 2017) – The South Central Ohio Educational Service Center, in New Boston, kicked off a series on Sept. 7 of English Language Arts (ELA) and Math workshops for local educators to review new standards set by the Ohio Department of Education.

“We are looking at the revisions that are ocurring between the 2010 standards and the 2017 standards that we are getting ready to implement in 2018-19,” said Kara Copeland, curriculum supervisor at the South Central Ohio ESC.

Nearly 30 teachers from ESC member school districts attended the first ELA workshop on Sept. 7.

“Probably the biggest change (among ELA standards) was the focus on objective summaries in high school. They have to write objective summaries in 9th and 10th grades, and they have to complete an analysis of literature and non-fiction during 11th and 12th grades,” explained Tammy Hambrick, curriculum supervisor at the South Central Ohio ESC.

ELA Standards and Assessment workshops are scheduled for Sept. 7 (high school), Oct. 3 (3rd grade), Oct. 17 (4th grade), Oct. 24 (5th grade), Nov. 7 (6th grade), Nov. 16 (7th grade), and Nov. 28 (8th grade). Math Standards and Assessment workshops are scheduled for Sept. 13 (high school), Oct. 5 (3rd grade), Oct. 19 (4th grade), Oct. 26 (5th grade), Nov. 8 (6thgrade), Nov. 17 (7th grade), and Nov. 29 (8th grade).

Registration is available on the South Central Ohio ESC website, at www.scoesc.org.

“It takes a lot of time to dig in and understand the content-standards and to make sure our teachers have the opportunity to think about, and analyze and explore the standards so they can do the best job possible when they are teaching the students,” Hambrick said.
