The Portsmouth Area Arts Council (PAAC) has teamed up with Shawnee State University and Cincinnati Shakespeare Company for the Second Annual Shakespeare in the Park performance.
The mission of the Portsmouth Area Arts Council is to integrate the arts into the lives of children and families and to encourage the appreciation of the arts and cultural heritage of the region.
The show will take place on the Shawnee State University Alumni Green, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. There are no bleachers or seating options available so patrons are encouraged to bring their own seating, whether that be a lawn chair or blanket. The event is admission free and open to all ages.
“Last year’s performance was Romeo and Juliet,” said PAAC Director, Becky Lovins. “The only weekend we were able to schedule with Cincinnati Shakespeare Company was the Friday of Fair Week, so we had some scheduling conflicts. Despite that, we still had over 150 people show up.”
This year, the company will be performing Macbeth, a Scottish play with fast-paced drama and plot twists. The classic tragic tale tells of intrigue, prophecy, murder and betrayal.
“Cincinnati Shakespeare has an amazing take on the classics,” explained Lovins,”It’s very much traditional Macbeth except the staging and costuming will be given a more modern feel. It’s still a tragedy, they won’t change the concept, and it definitely will not even be rated PG-13. It’s meant to be a family event.”
Lovins is confident that the event will see growth this year.
“We’ve had a lot of interest this year, we’ve taken lots of phone calls because it sounds too good to be true,” said Lovins. “But it’s true, it’s completely free, the Arts council pays for the performance and we don’t charge any admission. Bring a lawn chair, bring a blanket and enjoy.”
