If you’ve never got around to returning those books to the library — now is the time to act.
Portsmouth Public Library and all other branches are hosting a Fine-Free week for patrons.
Up until July 25, patrons can return overdue books and the late fees will be waived by the library.
For those with existing account balances, just bring in half of the balance and the library will waive the other half.
“Sometimes people will have a really high balance, say five years ago they checked out a bunch of items and never returned them, or lost them,”explained Programs Manager Katie Williams. “You have to have your account balance below $5 to check out items. This is a great opportunity for people to pay off their cards and get back to using the library.”
According to Williams, fine-free weeks are held as needed and they have no schedule for the next event.
“Sometimes we do it twice a year, sometimes we don’t do it at all,” said Williams. “We don’t know for sure when the next one is going to be. We’re encouraging people to take advantage of this opportunity while it’s here.”
Following the fine-free week, these programs will be offered from July 25 through the 30.
