Beautification awards given out

If you attend enough Portsmouth City Council meetings, one thing will become obvious, each member of council has their own individual interests, which makes for a well-rounded governing body. It doesn’t take long to discover First Ward Councilman Kevin W. Johnson is about beautification.

On Monday, Johnson announced the two most recent beautification award winners. They are Robert and Wilma Coffey of 2423 Sunrise Ave., and Rickey and Yolanda Wilson of 2748 Sunrise Ave.

“Some dozen of these awards have been made over the past four years,” Johnson said. “It consists of members meeting with the homeowner(s) to present the award.”

Johnson said the purpose is to recognize homeowners for their beautification investments in their homes.

Johnson was quick to add — “I do not participate in choosing who gets the award. Such is done by the members of the Portsmouth Garden Club.”

A sign was provided for each couple’s property by the Portsmouth Garden Club that reads — “Beautification Award presented by Portsmouth Garden Club and City Councilman Kevin W. Johnson.”

And the pictures provided are of the latest awards (as well as the sign given to the owners announcing the award).
