Community bands together for Gauntlet VI

The Gauntlet VI event was moved this year from PSKC to Spartan stadium due to ever increasing numbers in participation. Also called ‘The Showdown’, more than 200 people came out to the Gauntlet event, according to Monica Sa, leader and coordinator of Gauntlet VI.

“This is actually a PSKC event, which is a Portsmouth Spartan Kettlebell Club, we are located at Third and Court streets in downtown Portsmouth, and we are a Crossfit gym, and this is our sixth annual Gauntlet event,” Sa said. “This is the first time that we have been able to hold this here at Spartan Stadium because participation numbers have increased each year, so we outgrew PSKC, and had to move it to a larger location.”

Sa said events such as Gauntlet VI are very important to the community.

“Events like this are important. As you can see, we have people from all around the Tri-State area getting together and having a good time,” Sa said. “It is a team competition, so we get to exercise, get fit, and have a lot of fun in the process. “

There were 32 teams that participated in this year’s Gauntlet, and the numbers are expected to keep going up, as more people take part and enjoy their experience.

“We also support a local organization called Team SAR, which is essentially for veterans who have gone to war and were wounded and are back in the community,” Sa said. “Some have missing legs, arms, but they are right back into the community trying to exercise, and we provide support to them.”

Derrick Carver, co-founder of Team SAR, said it is all about the community coming together.

“I served as a captain in the Army. If you think about. There is about 200 people or more out here in the rain, enjoying themselves and having a good time,” Carver said. “The larger aspect of this is community, everyone suffering together and sacrificing together. Some of these people don’t see each other but once a year. Everyone here has similar goals, and puts in 100 percent, and that is what brings everybody together.”
