On Tuesday, the Scioto County Board of Commissioners passed an official resolution honoring local golfers Mitchell McFarland, Jordan Tieman and Brynden Roark for their outstanding performances on the links.
The board congratulated McFarland for his performance at the Memorial Junior Golf Tournament and the Golf Week Midwest Junior Invitational.
McFarland shot a 73 at the Memorial Junior Golf Tournament, which placed him in a tie for the top spot. By finishing at the top of the leader board in the Memorial Junior Tournament, which was a qualifier for the Golf Week Midwest Junior Invitational, McFarland made the cut.
On the par-72 course in Chicago, McFarland finished third overall. The Wheelersburg junior shot a 76 during the opening round and a 77 on the final day, which left him nine strokes over par, four shots off the lead.
Tieman won first place and earned Player of the Year honors in the 13-15 years of age division at the 2014 Tri-State Junior Golf Tour. He has an 18-hole low score of 67, and shot a 69 this year in a Tri-State Junior Golf Tour event at The Elks Country Club.
“I knew I had a pretty good score going, but I wasn’t trying to think about it,” he said of his performance at The Elks. “I just hitting all the shots like I was supposed to, and I just got on a roll.”
Roark, playing in the 10-12 year old division, won first place and Player of the Year honors for the second straight year. He has an 18-hole score of 79 and a handicap of 16. The Portsmouth West Middle School student has worked diligently on developing his short game.
