CHILLICOTHE — The Ohio Department of Transportation – District 9’s Construction Department and one of its contractors have been recognized for outstanding performances for projects in Adams and Scioto counties.

Together, the district’s construction department and the Shelly Company have received the 2015 Quality in Construction Award from the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) for resurfacing and bridge rehabilitation projects on state Route 125 in Adams County and S.R. 139 in Scioto County during last year’s construction season.

According to NAPA’s web site, www.asphaltpavement.org, its awards program recognizes excellence in asphalt paving with its Quality in Construction Awards. The category has three tiers – project using less than 50,000 tons of asphalt, highway projects using more than 50,000 tons of asphalt, and airport pavement projects – and projects earning a Quality in Construction Award are measured against industry standards and best practices.

During last year’s construction season, crews from the Shelly Company completed asphalt overlay resurfacing projects on S.R. 125, between the Brown County line and S.R. 41 in West Union, and on S.R. 139, beginning at the Portsmouth corporation in Scioto County and continuing to the Jackson County line.

Leading the 8.5-mile resurfacing project on S.R. 125 for ODOT were John Denniston and Brent Davis, while Eric McLaughlin, Phyllis Harris and Aaron Montgomery led ODOT’s construction team for the 17.5-mile project on S.R. 139. The district’s area field engineers for the Adams and Scioto County projects were Chad Mitten and now-retired Victor Picciano, respectively.

“We have an outstanding team of engineers, inspectors and technicians working throughout the district, and I congratulate our crews and the crews from the Shelly Company for their efforts to deliver successful projects that not only preserve our transportation network, but also serve the traveling public well,” said ODOT District 9 Deputy Director Vaughn Wilson.

Nationally, 205 projects completed by 79 companies were honored with a Quality in Construction Award for 2015.
