Students display ‘Youthful Visions’

PORTSMOUTH — In celebration of Youth Art Month, the Local History Department of the Portsmouth Public Library will display an exhibit of artwork created by local high school art students.

The “Youthful Visions” display consists of both two- and three-dimensional work in a variety of media.

Started nationally in 1961, Youth Art Month encourages support for quality school art programs, and promotes art material safety.

The program exists to recognize art education as a viable factor in the total education curriculum that develops citizens of a global society, and encourages commitment to the arts by students, community organizations, and individuals everywhere.

The local exhibit, on display March 1-31 in the Local History Department, will include artwork from students at Clay, East, Minford, New Boston, Northwest, Portsmouth, Valley, West, and Wheelersburg high schools. Special bookmarks designed by the students will also be available to library patrons.

Carolyn Cottrell, Local History Department supervisor, said the library began hosting the exhibit in 2002 and visitors look forward to it every year.

“We’ve already had people coming in and asking about it,” she said. “We have some very talented students in the area, and I wish we had more venues for them to display their art because there is real talent here.”

Cottrell said the show is a great way for local art students to get their name out, and said one student was even commissioned because of their display.

This event is sponsored by Boneyfiddle Arts Center, Scioto Foundation and the Portsmouth Rotary Club and is coordinated by Gifted Services Coordinator Sharee Price, of the South Central Ohio Educational Service Center (ESC) in New Boston.
