It was a touching sight to behold; the scene of cancer survivors participating in the Survivor Lap, displaying strength, courage, and victory at the American Cancer Society Relay For Life event held at Christ’s Community Church on Friday. The event raised more than $61,000.

With a lengthy time span of 2 p.m. until midnight, the Relay For Life event convened. Rosie Williams, event lead for the fundraising for Relay For Life, said the length of time is symbolic.

“One of the things that we try to do is to represent what a survivor goes through from daylight to dark, so we try to go through the day light hours into the evening and up through the night just as a cancer survivor has to do when they are going through their treatments,” Williams said.

She said the object of the Relay For Life teams is to raise money to help eradicate cancer.

“One of the main that we do is fund raise all year long to help raise money to help cancer. Whether it is through research, or whether it is through patients receiving aid from the American Cancer Society,” she said. “But, what brings it back home is the personal connection that each and everyone of us has with either a family member, or ourselves, or a friend, or a co-worker.”

Some of the highlights of the event for the celebration included an Opening Ceremony, with the Star Spangled Banner sung by Andy McGinnis, Survivor Lap and Balloon Release, Caregiver Lap in Memory of Lap, Team Lap, and the Survivor’s Dinner, and a series of Looney Laps. The celebration also included a live auction, and live entertainment by Doc Roc and the Remedies, Highway 109, Bobby Blanton and Abby Wright. The Luminary Ceremony was held.

Williams said the celebratory event also allows them to give back to cancer survivors, and the support from the community is greatly appreciated.

“It also allows us as a community to give back to the survivors that are going through cancer through our Survivor Dinner and Survivor Lap, and so forth,” she said. “And also, our Luminary Lap which is in memory of those who have passed on with cancer, is a very touching thing to do. We would just like to thank Christ’s Community Church, and the community, whether in fundraising, donations and just support of the event.”
