Scioto County Sheriff’s detectives and deputies, and the Portsmouth Police Department, converged on a house in Franklin Furnace Thursday morning and arrested Matthew C. Steele, 37, of Franklin Furnace.

Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini said his office had been actively searching for Steele after he failed to show up for his court date to be sentenced to prison.

He said detectives had been following-up leads and information as to Steele’s whereabouts and were able to get information that the he was staying at 113 Napoleon Lane in Franklin Furnace.

Donini said officers and the K-9 unit responded to that location at 8:40 a.m. Thursday and upon arrival Steele fled through the back door of the house and ran into a field behind the residence. Deputies, detectives along with k-9 officer “dark” pursued the suspect who was arrested without incident.

Donini said the investigation into the case is ongoing and will result in other charges being presented to the Scioto County grand jury at a later date on Steele and the family members authorities say were concealing Matt inside that location.

Steele is being held without bond and will appear in Common Pleas Court on a later date to be sentenced.

Steele had been sought after being charged in connection with a crime spree in the Franklin Furnace area earlier this month.
