On Thursday, the Main Street Portsmouth (MSP) Board of Directors, officially hired Joseph Pratt to be their next executive director.

Pratt joins the organization after a career as the entertainment and education reporter for the Daily Times.

“I’ve loved writing for the paper, because it has given me the opportunity to tell the stories of Portsmouth that I believe to be important,” Pratt said. “We have more than drugs and crime. We have a rich Appalachian culture and history, talented artists, determined small business owners, and a caring community of people who always astonish me in how much they are willing to give back to their home.”

According to the MSP website, they are an economic development organization that works specifically to enhance the district and improve the image of downtown while promoting the great stories and unique architecture.

Pratt said, as MSP Executive Director, he hopes to be a community cheerleader.

“I want to highlight the positives of my home, while helping Portsmouth grow economically, in organization, opportunities, and more,” Pratt said. “I have plenty of ideas that I would like to incorporate into the Main Street Portsmouth mission, but I am most looking forward to working with a wonderful board of community leaders, who are on top in their respective fields.”

Sue Burke, President of the MSP Board of Directors said they were excited to bring Pratt on board.

“We’re excited about having our first male director. He has a real positive outlook about the community and we felt like it was an advantage to hiring him, because he has working relationships with many of the downtown merchants,” Burke said.

Pratt is currently wrapping up his career as a Portsmouth Daily Times writer. His final day with PDT will be December 25 and he will transition into his new role as executive director of Main Street Portsmouth on December 28.
