Following a winning election with the most votes, which set up Franklin Furnace resident Sandy Poe with another four-year term on the Green Local School District Board of Education, she received a statewide prestigious honor.

The award came from the Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA), in the form of its most prestigious honor, naming her a 2015 All-Ohio School Board member.

On November 11, OSBA Executive Director Richard Lewis recognized All-Ohio School Board members on the final day of its 60th annual conference, a four-day convention attended by nearly 10,000 Ohio school board members and educational leaders.

Each year, OSBA names one board of education member from each of its five regions — Central, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast and Southwest — to the All-Ohio School Board. The award recognizes outstanding service to public education and represents the dedication shown by thousands of board members across the state.

“To be honored for what comes naturally to me, in my career, is like one of those things you hear on the Oscars; I just simply love what I do,” Poe said. “I don’t necessarily believe I need to be honored, but it was just a very awesome experience.”

All-Ohio School Board candidates are nominated by their respective school boards; OSBA regional committees then select the five winners. Poe, who has served six years on the Green board, represents OSBA’s Southeast Region.

In nominating Poe, her colleagues wrote, “she works tirelessly to help create an atmosphere focused on the best interest of students and the district. She researches, reads, studies and discusses issues with an open mind, willing to examine all sides.”

Superintendent Jodi Armstrong said that she believes no one to be more deserving than Poe.

“Sandy Poe is an exceptional educator and not just a board member, but a tremendous support with a student focus,” Armstrong said. “On a personal note, Sandy was my second grade teacher and a primary reason I chose education as a career. She is a most deserving member of this community, who always has student interests at heart.”

Poe, a retired teacher, is active in multiple school activities, including the District Leadership Team and Project MORE, which strives to improve the reading levels of Ohio’s students with disabilities and at-risk students. Additionally, she sends each graduate a card from the board of education every year.

“It was a great honor and just a boost that energized me for another four years, I think,” Poe explained. “It is nice to be recognized, and to know you’re appreciated. I am ready to continue what I’ve been doing and to keep working for the kids.”
